There are so many dog shows to enter your Pug into. Just the AKC alone has over 4000 affiliated clubs! Each show will have their own set of rules. There are some rules that are generally followed to enter your pet into a dog show:
You must have your dog registered
Your dog must be of a certain age, many shows require the dog to be at least 6 months old
When you purchase your Pug, you must ask for their papers. Any breeder will have papers and individuals who are selling their Pug would most likely have papers as well.
Dogs from shelters may not have papers, however there is a way that you may still be able to get them. There may be other avenues for help; but the CKC (Continental Kennel Club) will allow an owner to apply for papers. You will need:
To fill out an application
Provide pictures of your dog
Have witnesses to state that your Pug is a purebred
Choose a Type of Dog Show
There are 3 kinds of dog shows:
All Breed
Group
Specialty
An All Breed show will be all breeds of dogs. There will be more than 150 breeds of dogs. There will be winners for each type of breed and then an overall winner out of the breed winners.
A Group show will be only for 1 of the 7 groups. The Pug dog will fall into the category of "Toy Group".
A Specialty dog show will vary according to breed.
With many dog shows you will enter your dog into a competition according to gender and age.
Should You Show Your Pug?
There are a lot of great reasons to show your Pug off at a dog show! This can be a great experience for you and your dog. Lots of people will be able to see just how wonderful your Pug is, you will meet a bunch of other owners and you may just be able to go home with a ribbon.
Anyone with a full bred Pug can enter a dog show. Many are familiar with the AKC (American Kennel Club), however there are 9 nationally known dog clubs and lots of local ones.
You may win a ribbon that shows how great your Pug is!
What to Wear
We all wonder what to wear to school, work, social events and even when we go shopping! So, it is important to know what to wear to a dog show; not only for you but also to follow the rules of the show. Each show, whether local or national, will have their own rules. However, just about every dog show has wardrobe rules so that the look and feel of the dog show is professional. Therefore, males are usually required to wear a suit, similar to the casual suit shown in the above picture.
Females have a bit of more variety to choose from. The basic guideline will be that you will want to wear an outfit that one would don to an important interview at a business organization. The look will be business professional/ business casual. Many ladies wear a matching skirt and jacket suit or a matching pants and jacket suit to a dog show. Your top will usually be a buttoned blouse. Owners are asked to walk their dog at a brisk pace around the dog show room floor; you will need to do this in dress shoes! However, you are not expected to wear high heels. A nice closed pump with a 1 inch heel will be appropriate for most shows.
How to Prepare
You Pug must be able to sit, walk and heel on command in order to do what is necessary in a dog show. You should allow plenty of time to make sure your dog is trained. Also, you want to make sure your Pug suddenly does not get shy. This can be controlled by exposing your dog to a lot of people in many different situations. Bring your Pug to many places where there are strangers, such as a large park and see if he or she will follow commands.
If the dog show is a far distance from your home, prepare well for the ride by stocking up with water and food. Stop every hour to let your Pug walk around. Make sure to bring all of your grooming supplies and arrive early to the dog show so that you will be able to make your Pug look as perfect as possible. Your dog will be judged on their appearance, thus dog clothes are strictly forbidden at a show.
