A reader wants to know how their Pug will get along with other dogs. Creating a happy and healthy environment for your Pug is a vital aspect of being a responsible and loving owner.
Q: I have a 3 year old male Pug dog. I'm thinking about getting another dog, does it matter what breed I get? Will a Pug get along with other dogs? ~ Amber M.
A: Hi Amber. This is an important question! If the wrong dog is brought into your home, this could lead to an unhappy and unhealthy environment for your Pug. The Pug dog will get along with just about any other dog; however you must choose a dog that fits well into the life you have with your current pet.
One of the most critical issues will be that you must have a second dog that does not affect the health of your current Pug. A hyper and extremely active dog may appear amusing to your Pug, however this will most likely lead to your Pug attempting to keep up with his new friend. As he struggles to do so, breathing problems will probably occur. A dog such as the Chihuahua or Miniature Pincher dog are not your best bet.
You will want to have a dog that is happy with your current schedule. This will include not staying outside with them in hot or very warm weather, keeping walks to a healthy minimum to provide exercise but not overheat, etc. Purely by temperament, another Pug may fit in. Keeping in mind the issue of shedding, you may wish to consider if you wish to double your cleaning duties!
A Shih Tzu, Terrier or many other dog breeds may be the right choice. Before you get your heart set on a particular dog we strongly suggest testing the waters. You should bring your Pug to meet their potential new brother or sister. Take note of how they interact; it is best if you can have them meet more than once.
When you do find a great match, be sure to pay just as much attention to your Pug as you do to a new dog. The Pug breed is very sensitive and he will notice if you are not giving him as much love and time.
