Is My Pug Dog's Face Infected?

A reader asks a question regarding their Pug dog's face and wrinkles, worried of a possible infection.  This breed often has issue in regard to the wrinkles on their face; daily care is needed and strict attention paid to any possible problems.

Q:  There is a bad smell coming from my Pug's face, is this normal? What could this be and how can I fix the smell? ~ Brandon C.

A:  Hi Brandon, we are happy you asked about this as it is an important Pug problem. If a bad odor is coming from your Pug dog's wrinkles, this is not normal.  At best, your dog is in need of lots of grooming; however most likely a very bad smell emitting from the wrinkles will be a yeast infection.  This can be cured with antibiotics obtained from your dog's veterinarian.

Once the infection clears, gentle yet thorough cleaning should be done each day.  Some will suggest to clean the wrinkles once per week; however when you own a Pug dog you must be committed to providing extra care; daily cleaning will greatly reduce the odds that your Pug gets another wrinkle infection.

It is suggested to clean each fold with tearless baby shampoo.  While there are solutions that you may use; this method also works, as the shampoo will not cause any type of allergic reaction and will be gentle on your dog's face.  Using a cotton swab, take time and care to clean all of the folds.  Without poking into your dog's face, be sure to reach all the way into each fold and continue using swabs until one is clean and dry when you take it out.  You may then wipe in a bit of petroleum jelly; this is optional.
