Training Your Pug to Listen
A reader writes in for help as the owner of an out of control Pug.  While many Pug dogs will be laid back and calm, some will have a stubborn streak.  Learn how to handle a wild Pug dog.

Q:  My Pug won't walk nice with me, he's always pulling away and trying to jump on people.  How do I train my Pug to listen to me? ~ Joshua G.

A:  Help is on the way, Joshua.   This is just a matter of training; however we should mention that all male dogs will behave calmer once neutered.  You may wish to consider having this done if your dog is not already sterilized.  That set aside, there are training methods to teach your dog to listen to you.

When you take him for a walk,  keep the leash very short.  This will be needed so that you can control the situation and not the reverse.  Training your Pug to listen to you will be a matter of you taking charge and your dog learning that it is in his best interest to behave.

When you are walking, keep you dog within 2 steps of you.  Each time he tries to jump on someone or not walk with you, jerk the leash a bit and stop walking.  Remain standing and look down at him.  Sternly say "Behave" and remain there until he calms down.  When he does so,  continue walking.

If you see something coming up ahead that normally would trigger bad behavior, such as another dog, keep walking but talk to your Pug in a tone that evokes calmness.

Whenever your dog does behave properly when you are walking and does listen to you, you must give him a reward to train him to know that his behavior pleased you.  For example, is you pass by a person and your dog does not try to jump up, stop and offer great praise.  Talk in an excited and happy tone.  Give him a tasty treat.  Pat him and show you are proud.

After some time on the short leash, your dog will learn that he is rewarded for good behavior, rewarded for listening to you and that attempting to misbehave is not going to work.  Once your dog is trained, you will be able to go for happy , peaceful walks.
