Pug Dog Eyes
A reader writes in, concerned about all sorts of things he has heard about the eyes of a Pug dog and potential problems.  Let's sort out what is fact and what is fiction.

Q:  Can you tell me if a Pug dogs have a lot of eye problems? I've heard a lot of stuff about Pug's eyes getting infected a lot and someone told me their eyes can pop out! ~ Connor C.

A: Hi Connor.  Let's get all of the facts out regarding a Pug dog's eyes.  There is a lot of information floating around on the web, so we are happy to have this opportunity to straighten out the facts.

Can a Pug dog's eyes pop out?  There is no medical reason why a Pug's eye would pop or fall out unless an injury occurred to make this happen.  This breed does have large, somewhat protruding eyes, however they are held into place by ligaments just as any other dog, or human for that matter.

Are a Pug dog's eyes sensitive and prone to infection? Yes, this breed does have sensitive eyes; one reason being that they are large are protruding so small particles can enter the eye and cause irritation.  All breeds must be taken care of and have their own set of particular grooming needs.  A Pug is no different; one of their needs will be for their owner to pay close attention to any eye problems.  Bring your dog to its veterinarian if you notice:
  • Red eyes
  • A particle in the eye
  • The dog trying to scratch an itchy eye
Your dog's veterinarian can give you a gentle eye solution to clear out the eyes and to use as maintenance as well.  To protect your Pug from potential eye problems, try to eliminate elements that may touch their eyes:
  • Food bowls should be at a height in which the eye does not touch the rim when their head is in the bowl
  • Be careful when you go for walks, not allowing your dog to poke his head into bushes where leaves or thorns could touch the eye
  • Take care when grooming your dog to not touch the eyes
