Pug Dog Puppy Care
Overview

Taking care of a puppy is a lot of hard work...and it is worth it!

When you have a dog from the age of a young pup, this gives you a wonderful opportunity.  It offers you a chance to bond with your dog from the very beginning.  This also gives you an advantage because you will be able to train and teach your dog what they need to know before they learn any bad behavior from elsewhere.  Lastly, there is nothing more magical than watching your Pug puppy grow into a beautiful adult dog.

Your New Pug Puppy

Your new Pug puppy is going to learn everything about the world from you; this is a big responsibility.  You will need to slowly and steadily train your dog how to behave.  You will introduce your puppy to so many elements and it will be your job to teach your dog what is right and what is wrong.

Getting Your Puppy Comfortable

One of the most important parts of bringing a puppy home is allowing the dog to become used to his or her new surroundings.  Allow your pup to roam around and check out their new home.  You must always keep their water in one spot; they must be able to always know where to go to have a drink.  You should always put their dog food dish down in one area also; a puppy must have the security of always knowing where their food will be.  Choose a quiet area where there will not be a lot of people walking by.

Show your new Pug puppy where they can find their toys.  It is best to have a large collection of chews and toys inside of a basket or dog toy box.  When your puppy starts teething, they will need to know exactly where they can find relief by chewing on appropriate dog toys that will ease their pain.

Show your puppy where they will be sleeping.  It is important that a young puppy knows where they can go to relax if things become overwhelming.

Puddles, Piddles & Messes

Your young Pug puppy will have almost no control over their bladder when they are very young.  The absolute longest that a 2 month old pup can hold their needs is 2 hours.  As they grow older, this time will increase.  Usually it will increase by 1 hour for each month that goes by.

You should take your Pug outside (or lead them to their litter box if you will be training them to be litter box trained) many times:
  • When they first wake up
  • After each of their 3 meals
  • After every nap time
  • Before bedtime
Growing Pains

Your puppy will enter into a crazy teething phase and you must be prepared.  The best way to deal with this is to have many dog toys that are specially made to be put in your freezer.  Chewing on the cold toys will ease the pain.  Many puppies also love to chase around an ice cube.  If you have a non-carpeted floor, this can keep your Pug amused and the cold will help them cope with their woes.

Your New Pug Puppy and Other Dogs

Puppy care guidelines will tell you to keep your new puppy away from any strange dogs; you will have no way of knowing if a dog that is unknown to you is up-to-date on all of their shots and/or carrying a disease.  Many new puppy owners already have another dog in the household.  In cases such as this, if you are 100% confident that your current dog is up-to-date on all shots and is disease free, there is no reason to keep your new Pug puppy away from your other dog.

As your Pug puppy grows older and is receiving the needed vaccinations, you can slowly begin introducing your new puppy to other dogs and allow normal socialization to begin.

The Necessities

To have a healthy and happy puppy who will grow into a happy and healthy adult dog, make sure to always provide the essentials:
  • A proper diet
  • The right amount of exercise
  • A good grooming routine
  • Always keep veterinarian appointments for  needed vaccinations and frequent checkups
  • Never think that your Pug is immune to the possibility of heartworms - preventive medication is a must
  • Keep an eye out for health problems
  • Always return affection & love...Pugs are very sensitive and their feelings can be hurt easily. A hug goes a long way!
