The Task of House Training
One of the most important things that you will ever teach your Pug is house training. Smaller toy dogs such as the Pomeranian or Chihuahua can actually be trained to use a cat litter box. However, with the Pug being the largest of the toy dog breed, you will need to teach your dog how to eliminate outside.
In addition, your Pug is an inside dog. This means that while you can certainly can and should bring your dog outside for walks, play and exercise, your Pug needs to live inside the home and cannot be left outside for any large amount of time.
Therefore, house training will be top on your list whether you just got your Pug or your long time canine companion needs some nudging in the right direction.
When Will Your Dog be Ready?
Do not expect or even try to train your Pug until he or she is at least 10 weeks old. House training efforts before this time will be a waste of time. When your Pug is just a small puppy, you can keep him or her inside a gated room lined with newspaper, so that you can easily clean any messes.
Once your Pug is past the 10 week mark, it is time to begin. Keep in mind that this is a process, a step-by-step training that in time will become second nature.
