Pug Dog Behavior and Temperament

Do All Pugs Behave the Same?

While all dogs are, of course, in the canine family there are two elements to understand.

1. Each breed does carry certain traits of behavior.  Most,  but not all Pugs,  will have certain characteristic behavior that is breed into their bloodline.

2. While a Pug can be generalized with a certain disposition, each and every Pug has their own personality and way of showing affection and emotions
.

In regard to Pug dog behavior, this breed cannot be classified as being energetic or calm.  One of the elements that makes the Pug dog so fantastic is that they exhibit both characteristics.  If you know another owner of a Pug who talks about how their dog never stops moving around, do not worry if your Pug prefers to relax by your side while you watch movies.  This dog can be very content laying on the couch and then happily jumping up to go for a walk with you.

The Pug dog's behavior and temperament will adapt to the atmosphere in which he lives.  Owners who have an excited Pug who appears to be restless and wish he were more calm;  are then asked to take note of the environment that they are offering.  More often than not, the house itself will be a rush of people coming and going, loud noises and children yelling.  An owner should offer the type of environment and behavior that they wish for their dog to exhibit.  A dog can not be expected to remain calm if the house is in chaos.  However, very adaptable,  the Pug dog will follow the habits of its owners. For example, calm and quiet Sunday mornings with activity in the afternoon.

While it can be said that in general a Pug dog is a bit stubborn, this is only in general.  Any dog will have his or her own personality.  If you do have a Pug dog that is stubborn, this simply means that some extra training will be involved to show your dog how you wish for them to behave.
See training

Unless severely abused by a previous owner, any dog can be trained to behave as you wish.  A Pug dog, no matter what their individual personality will always be loving and loyal to their owner or owners. They get along well with other dogs and they are great with children.  Being treated as an important member of the family will induce better bonding and training.
A Pug dog will be more open to behaving appropriately when:
  • Given proper feeding
  • Given toys
  • A warm and safe place to sleep
  • Interaction with its owner and family
  • Kept inside, except when outside with its owner during non-severe weather conditions to exercise and play
  • Brought for regular checkups
  • Shown affection and kind words.

When treated with kindness and caring, the Pug will return the love ten-fold. The Pug is fiercely loyal, protective and shows great emotion. Most Pug dogs will follow their owner all over the house and do so with a great, happy attitude.  Overall analysis of the Pug: This is a perfect dog to have for singles or a family who can offer an inside environment with daily outside bursts of activity.
