A Pug dog owner is concerned about her dog's breathing ability on hot summer days. This is a common concern, since this dog breed already has breathing limitations. Learn how to keep your dog safe and healthy when the temperature rises.
Q: I live in Texas where it gets very hot. I love taking my Pug out for walks but how much do I need to worry about keeping my dog in the heat? Can Pug dogs be in the hot summer sun even for a little while? ~ Heather L.
A: Hi Heather, this brings up an important subject and we are happy that you inquired about this. Pug dog owners need to think about how hot they feel outside in the summer and then multiply that x 5 for their dogs. A human sweats in the heat, Pug dogs can only sweat through their paws and this method barely helps to cool them off. A Pug dog in the summer heat will pant in an attempt to cool off; however this is very difficult for them.
As you are probably aware, a Pug dog was bred to have a flat face. With the snout essentially non-existent, this breed already has a difficult time breathing when they exert themselves too much. Add onto that a hot summer day, with a Pug dog forced to pant excessively in order to try and cool down and this most likely will lead to trouble!
A Pug dog will get heatstroke very fast. You will know they are in trouble when:
Your dog pants heavily and cannot stop
Stares as if they are not aware of their surroundings
Vomits
Has very warm skin
Excessive saliva is dropping from their mouth
Part of the enjoyment of having a pet is to go for walks. It is a great motivation to get off the couch and be active. We suggest that you take your Pug dog for walks in the early morning or late evening. Going for a walk after dinner, as the sun is setting can be very relaxing and a great way to exercise your Pug without risking heat stroke.
