Why So Many Myths?

The Pug dog is a very unique breed.  This dog stands apart from so many other types of dogs; with its unusual appearance and rather amusing and fun personality there have been some myths mistaken for fact.

When a dog is so popular, people and even whole societies will believe "facts" about the Pug dog.  Here, we discuss what is fact and what is fiction.

Pug Dogs Snore

Fact.  It is true that the Pug snores; this is because of the way in which it was bred for centuries: to have a flat face and a small nose.  This restricts breathing while laying down and will cause the Pug to snore while catching zzz's. However, depending on the dog, this can be a faint snoring or one which rocks the house.

Pug Dogs Must Remain Inside

Fiction.
However, because of how they were bred for appearance, their short noses disrupt their ability to regulate their body temperature.  Therefore, while they may certainly can and should have daily periods of exercise outdoors and of course be led outside to eliminate, the Pug dog is an inside dog.  This breed can not handle cold or heat.  An air temperature between 70 degrees Fahrenheit (21.1 Celsius) and 77 degrees Fairenheit i(25 degree Celsius) is the ideal environment for the Pug.

Pug Dogs are Lazy

Fiction.  The Pug is such a fantastic pet because whether its owners are energize people or couch potatoes, the Pug will fit in perfectly with the family.  This breed most definitely loves to cuddle up on the couch to nap; however in the same day this dog may be found exploring around to satisfy its strong curiosity.  Just like humans, the Pug may feel like lazing around or taking a short stroll.  Because the Pug overheats so quickly, this dog is unable to take long hikes.

Pug  Dogs Shed A Lot

Fact.  However, anyone who owns just about any breed of dog should be prepared for the element of shedding.  There are so many different types of breeds; how can one say that a Pug sheds more than normal?  What is normal?  A short haired Chihuahua or a Sheep Dog?  The Pug will shed no more than your vacuum and lint brush can't handle.

Pug Dogs Snort

Fiction.  The Pug will make noise that one may interpret as a snort, but this is not the case.  Because this dog has such a flat and short nose, when a Pug sneeze it usually must inhale the forced air as opposed to letting it out.  This causes the dog to make a noise, of course.  This type of sneezing is triggered by drinking water quickly, pressure being put on its collar bone or getting excited.  Anyone who loves their Pug will come to love the noises this cute little guy makes.

A Pug is Affectionate

Fact.  The Pug is not just affectionate, this dog will literally do just about anything to get attention and hugs from its owner.  The Pug has an almost uncontrollable need for love; they will make funny faces, dance around and act very silly to gain the attention from the people they consider family.  When you have a Pug, you have a best friend, companion and soul mate for life.

Pug Dogs Have a Lot Of Medical Problems

Fiction.  Every breed that exists has its own set of potential medical problems and issues. The Pug, if cared for properly, will not have any more medical issues than another breed.  This particular breed in prone to eye problems and breathing problems that will need to be addressed by an experience veterinarian.

There is a Breed Called the Teacup or Miniature Pug

Fiction.  There is absolutely no such breed as the Miniature or Tea Cup Pug.  When a breeder crosses a Chihuahua (the smallest toy dog in the world) with the Pug (the largest toy dog in the world), it will produce a dog that resembles a Pug but is much smaller.  This type of breeding is risky; as the Chihuahua most often needs a Cesarean section when giving birth and the puppies may carry the potential medical issues of both parents.

There is a Dog Named a Puggle

Fact.
A Puggle is not an AKC recognized breed; however when a breeder mixes a Beagle and a Pug dog, this produces what is fast becoming a popular dog, now unofficially named the Puggle.  One must keep in mind that despite the cute name, this dog will technically be registered as a mixed breed and will not be allowed to enter dog shows.

A Pug Can Be a Good Watch Dog

Fiction. The Pug will watch to make friend with the person who breaks into your home, not bite him.  Thinking of every stranger as a potential friend, this dog is only concerned with adding to his "buddy list".  This is not considered a negative trait; who could possibly fault a dog that has so much friendliness and love?
