Pug Dog Colors
Overview

Many believe that the Pug can only be 1 of 2 colors… fawn or black. This is not true.  The AKC recognized 4 colors:

•    Fawn
•    Silver Fawn
•    Apricot Fawn
•    Black

There are also pure silver Pugs, however they are very rare and not recognized in most dog club registries.  A silver Pug, most often, needs to be registered as a fawn, even though the dog is clearly silver.

Some argue that there cannot be a silver Pug, that the dog must have been cross-bred.  However, the silver Pug does exist.  Its color is a throwback to its ancestors.

Types of Fawn

While the majority of Pugs are fawn (there are much fewer true black Pug dogs), there are actually variations of this fawn color.  While the AKC recognized 3 of them, since the shading can vary so much for each particular dog, there are actually endless shades of fawn.

When a fawn puppy is being registered, the owner must choose the color that is the closest match.  Many registries allow an owner to change the color on the pup's registration up to 3 times.  Why?  Because the color can change quickly over the first few weeks.

With fawn, one must choose:
  • Apricot fawn - This is a fawn with an orange hue
  • Silver fawn - This is a light shiny fawn
  • Fawn - This is a tan that can range from very light to medium tan
Color Changes

It is normal for a puppy to change coat color (to a certain degree) as he or she is maturing from pup to adolescent.  As the adult coat grows in, shading may change and the deepness of the fawn may change.  Therefore,  many owners will have an adult dog who is registered as a color that that dog is not.  For example, a pup may have been registered as fawn....and as that dog grows older, the fawn may turn into an apricot fawn.   Once papers are turned in, you cannot change the color on them.
